Minim Expectations - Chapter 6

The school had become routine by now, but something felt different today. As I entered the classroom, the shift in my perspective was undeniable. The shrinkees—who had once been slightly taller— loomed over me by a couple of inches. Their proportions and presence made me feel like I was shrinking even faster than I actually was. When I lined up next to the other shrinkees for our morning stretches, they were noticeably taller. Lily, who used to be my height, now stood a couple inches above me. Even Mei, the quiet girl with her ever-present doll, looked at me slightly downward.

At least they were more welcoming.

The stretches went as usual, but my body felt heavier and slower. It could be the shrinking, or it could be exhaustion from the past few days. As I reached up to stretch my arms, a warm sensation spread between my legs, pulling me from my thoughts.

Not again.

I barely even felt it happening this time. My body had decided that holding it in wasn’t necessary anymore. My cheeks burned as I instinctively lowered my arms and pressed my legs together, but the damage was already done.

Sighing, I raised my hand. "Teacher, may I go to the bathroom?"

She nodded, barely looking up, already used to this routine.

As I approached the door, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned to see Derrick following, a casual grin on his face. He reached out and took my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine.

"You okay?" he asked softly.

I hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah. Just… same as usual."

We walked in silence for a moment before I glanced up at him. He had always been a rebel, never one to follow the rules too closely, and he never seemed to care when he got in trouble. I envied that about him.

Then, without thinking, I asked, "Can you come in with me?"

Derrick raised an eyebrow. "You sure?"

I nodded. He then squeezed my hand. "Alright. I got your back."

And with that, we pushed the door of the shrinkee women’s restroom open and stepped inside together.

Everything had been perfect for a moment. The secrecy, the thrill, the feeling of control in a world where I had less and less of it. As we’re getting intimate again against the toilet, we heard something…

A woman’s scream.

A sharp shriek echoed through the restroom, forcing us to freeze in place. My heart stopped. Derrick’s eyes widened. We scrambled, rushing to pull our clothes back on, hands shaking with panic.

We barely had a moment to think before we shoved the stall door open and stepped out—straight into the stern gaze of Principal Higgins.

She didn't have to say a word.

The fury in her eyes, the way she stood with her arms crossed, her imposing height looming over us like a shadow—everything about her presence told us we were in deep trouble.

"Both of you," she said, her voice eerily calm. "To my office. Now."

I swallowed hard. Derrick clenched his jaw.

Neither of us said a word as we followed her out of the restroom and into the hallway, shame burning hot on my face. I couldn't even look at Derrick. My hands trembled at my sides as I stared at the floor, watching my too-small shoes take step after step toward the inevitable.

This was it.

The first time we were caught, it was embarrassing, but we got off easy. This time… this time, it was worse. There was no excuse, no way to talk our way out of it.

We reached the principal’s office, the door looming like a prison gate. She held it open, her gaze heavy with disappointment, and motioned for us to enter.

As we entered the familiar room, I couldn’t help but think—this wasn’t just a punishment.

This was the moment everything changed.

Ms. Higgins sighed, rubbing her temples as she looked at the two of us standing before her desk. “I gave you both a chance. I assumed you would learn from your mistakes. But after today, it’s clear that you aren’t ready to be in a classroom setting.”

Derrick and I exchanged nervous glances. We had already been through this routine, but her tone twisted my stomach.

“You’re both being sent home, effective immediately,” she continued her voice firmly. “Before you leave, we need to address another issue.”

I held my breath.

She gestured toward the door, and within seconds, the school nurse walked in—a woman I hadn’t seen before. She had a calm but professional demeanor, her white coat pristine as she carried a small package. I saw the familiar packaging from where I stood, and my heart sank.

“Ms. Graves, Mr. Ellis,” the principal said, nodding toward the nurse. “Given your repeated disregard for the rules, and considering your… condition, you will both be making the necessary transition.”

I took a step back. “Wait—what do you mean?”

The nurse, whose face I couldn’t recall because my mind was too clouded with dread, approached with a package that made my stomach drop. It wasn’t the babyish packaging I’d feared, but something worse—clinical, stark, and undeniable. The label read "MiniCare XS," a plain white adult diaper with a blue line running down the center, designed for shrinkees like me. My throat tightened as I realized what it was: a wetness indicator, a feature I’d seen in baby diapers, now repurposed for someone my size.

Principal HIggins states, her expression unwavering. “This school does not have the resources to allow sex in schools, and the accidents you keep having. The nurse will help you get fit into the appropriate size before you are sent home.”

Derrick looked just as horrified as I felt. “Come on, I just got out of them,” he argued, shaking his head.

“Well, you’re not going to stay in them big boy Pull-ups until you behave, junior. Emily, on the other hand, is still shrinking. Not like she has other options for garments anytime soon,” the principal responded coolly. “Either you comply, or we notify your guardians, and they’ll handle it here.”

Derrick protested and told them that he’ll let his mother chose what he wears…not when Ms. Higgins calls his mother up to make the changes.

For me, it’s different.

My hands trembled, the damp Easy Ups pressing against me as a constant reminder of how little control I had left. But this… this was the moment I had dreaded.

“How about you, Emily,” the nurse said gently, looking at me. “Would you like to have your mother do it, or would you like it done here?”

I swallowed hard. There was no way out of this. I stood frozen, my heart pounding so loudly I could barely hear the words around me. The nurse’s calm presence only made my situation feel more real. She bent down and whispered in my ear.

“Emily,” she said, her tone patient but firm. “What’s your choice?”

I wanted to refuse, to say that I won’t get embarrassed here, but my body felt too small, too weak to fight back. The soaked Easy Ups clung to me, proof that I’d already lost control. Deep down, I knew even another Pull-up wouldn’t change the inevitable.

I hesitated, my fingers curling into my dress. My voice was barely a whisper. “…Do it here.”

The words tasted bitter, but I had no fight left. The nurse nodded, her expression unreadable, and gestured for me to follow her. My legs felt heavy as I moved, the damp Easy Ups pressing against me with every step. She led me to the small side room attached to the office—a nurse’s station with a cushioned changing table along the wall.

“Come here, sweetheart,” she said softly.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and obeyed. She picked me up with ease and laid me onto the padded table. My dress pooled around me as I stared at the ceiling.

I flinched as she lifted the hem of my dress, exposing the swollen Easy Ups. The air felt cool against my skin as she worked efficiently, peeling the sides apart with practiced ease. The wet padding was pulled away, leaving me momentarily exposed, my face burning hotter than ever. “The lack of pubic hair is good,” she commented, mentioning something about my shrinking condition from notes the principal had given her.

I stayed silent. I just wanted this over with.

She reached for a container of baby powder, twisting the cap open. The soft, sweet scent filled the room, a smell I hadn’t associated with myself in years. “This will help keep you dry,” she murmured, sprinkling the fine white powder onto my skin, smoothing it around with a gentle touch. I shuddered and coughed slightly as the coolness settled in, her hand rubbing it in making the experience feel surreal.

Then came the rustle of plastic—the unmistakable sound of a fresh diaper being unfolded. My breath hitched as she opened the MiniCare XS. It was plain white, no childish characters, just a stark blue line running down the crotch. She lifted my legs gently, sliding the thick, soft material beneath me. The difference hit me instantly—this wasn’t just snug like the Easy Ups; it was substantial, padded, a cushioned weight I couldn’t ignore. The quilted lining pressed against my skin, plush yet humiliating.

She pulled the front up between my legs, the blue line disappearing under the panel, and began securing it. Two tapes per side—four in total. Each one made a sharp shrrrip as she peeled it from the backing and pressed it firmly into place: bottom left, top left, bottom right, top right. The diaper hugged my waist and thighs snugly, the leg gathers tight, the waistband resting just below my belly button. She ran her fingers along the edges, checking the fit, and nodded.

I shifted slightly, feeling the bulk between my legs—it was thicker than the Easy Ups, forcing my thighs apart, the plastic crinkling with every tiny movement. Unlike a baby diaper, this was clinical, functional, but that didn’t lessen the shame. The plain white color and blue wetness indicator made it look like something from a hospital, a stark reminder that I needed this level of protection.

The nurse gave a final pat on the front of the diaper before lowering my dress back down. “There we go,” she murmured, smoothing the fabric.

I sat up slowly, my breath shaky. The thick padding made every movement feel exaggerated, the crinkling plastic a constant reminder of my situation. Unlike the Easy Ups, which had offered some illusion of normalcy, this was heavier, bulkier, undeniably a diaper. The snug fit around my waist felt less like clothing and more like containment, sealing away my independence.

I swallowed hard, the soft bulk pressing against me. The plain white exterior didn’t mock me with cartoons, but it didn’t need to—the fact that it was an adult diaper, sized for my shrinking body, said enough. I was incontinent, reduced to this, and the blue line was there to announce every loss of control.

As I processed it all, a warmth spread between my legs. My breath hitched—I hadn’t even felt the urge. The diaper soaked it up, and the blue line began to change color, confirming what I couldn’t deny.

The nurse noticed immediately. “Wow, a few seconds in and you’ve already used it,” she said softly, no judgment in her tone. “Seems like the incontinence side effect is hitting you hard.”

The virus had taken my height…and control. For now, it was just urinary, but the fear of what might come next gnawed at me.

She reached for another MiniCare XS. “These need to be changed right after you wet, or you’ll get rashes. At least they’re comfortable, right?”

The words felt hollow as she

lifted me back onto the table, repeating the process—wipe, powder, fresh diaper. The tapes sealed me in again, snug and secure, the plain white plastic a blank canvas for my shame.

She placed a hand on my shoulder. “There’s nothing to be sad about. Just enjoy being pampered.”

I couldn’t look at her. That’s why I couldn’t remember her face.

***

Derrick and I stood outside, leaning against the school’s wall, listening to the muffled chatter of kids and teachers on the other side as we waited for our rides. Our padded bottoms, now an unavoidable part of our daily lives, ballooned beneath our childish outfits—Derrick struggled to contain the extra bulk under his jean shorts and blue Sonic the Hedgehog tee, while my toddler dress barely concealed the edges of my diaper peeking out from beneath the hem. The thick padding between our legs forced them apart slightly, an awkward stance that neither of us could ignore.

Derrick smirked at me, his eyes filled with playful mischief. “I hope your time was worth it.”

I sighed, glancing down at myself before meeting his gaze. “Trust me,” I replied, a wry smile tugging at my lips. “I know I won’t be here for long. I’m still shrinking an inch every day.”

"Damn, girl! No wonder I’ve been seeing you inching shorter since you got here." Derrick chuckled, shaking his head before flashing me a teasing grin. "You must’ve wanted my dick like it was on your bucket list."

I could only smile, tilting my head slightly as I shot back, "Check!"

Just as I was about to respond, the doors behind us creaked open, and a few familiar figures emerged.

Lily, Mei, and even Hana—the doll-sized shrinkee—stepped outside like they were sneaking away from class, their faces lit with amusement as they spotted us.

Lily let out a soft chuckle, covering her mouth. "Well, well, look at you two. Guess the rumors were true."

Mei, standing beside her with Hana cradled in her arms, tilted her head with a smirk. "They weren’t kidding about the padding."

Hana, nestled in Mei’s grip, crossed her tiny arms. "I thought you had a few more days before you were there, Emily."

Derrick huffed playfully, patting his hip where his shorts barely managed to conceal the bulk. "Yeah, yeah, get your laughs in while you can."

I rolled my eyes, feeling my face heat up but managing a smile. "Hey, at least I’m still taller than you guys… for now."

Lily gave me a knowing look. "Not for long."

The group chuckled again, but there was no malice behind it—just the usual teasing among those who understood.

Hana let out a small sigh. "Well, guess this is goodbye for now."

Mei nodded, shifting her weight slightly. "We’ll see you soon. Like it or not."

Lily gave me a small wave. "Yeah, don’t think you’re getting rid of us that easily."

I smiled despite everything. "I’d be disappointed if you didn’t."

As if on cue, Amanda’s vehicle pulled up against the curb, the familiar sight of it making my stomach twist with relief and uncertainty. Derrick turned to me, smirking, but there was something softer in his eyes. "Guess this is where we part ways. But hey, a little advice—discipline’s a part of you. You’ll get used to it."

I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "Like you’re one to talk."

With one last glance back at the group, I lifted my hand in a small wave. "See you guys around."

Derrick gave me one final pat before stepping away toward his own ride. "Take care, Babe. And don’t go shrinking too fast now, alright?"

I exhaled, turning toward Amanda’s car—only to freeze as I felt a presence behind me. My stomach dropped.

Amanda stood there, arms crossed, her face a mask of disappointment. "Emily Otha Johnson," she said in that tone—the one that made me feel instantly small. "What do you have to say for yourself?"

I swallowed hard, shifting awkwardly, feeling the thick padding between my legs press against me as I fumbled for an excuse. "I… I made a mistake."

Her eyes didn’t soften. If anything, they sharpened. "You didn’t just make a mistake. You got caught."

Before I could say another word, Amanda grabbed my arm and turned me slightly before landing a firm swat on my padded bottom.

SMACK!

I gasped, the impact muffled but still jarring. The thick diaper softened the blow, but the force of it sent a jolt through me—more embarrassing than painful. Before I could recover, another swat landed.

SMACK!

Heat flooded my cheeks as I clenched my fists, the crinkling of my diaper only making it worse. It was humiliating but also… familiar.

The memory rushed back—the moment Aiesha had spanked me in the parking lot when I had fought against sitting in a booster seat. The way my pride had crumbled, and my body had reacted despite the padding. Back then, I had felt foolish and indignant. Now, I just felt smaller.

SMACK!

By the third swat, I knew I had lost. The diaper absorbed most of the sting, but it couldn’t shield me from the overwhelming sense of powerlessness. It happened again. The second time, I had been punished like this–this time, in front of my Shrinkees, who looked sorry for me.

Amanda sighed, placing her hands on her hips. "Maybe now you’ll think twice before pulling another stunt like that."

I sniffled but nodded, my pride too shattered to argue.

Before I could react, she scooped me up with ease, my legs dangling as she carried me to the car. The motion made my freshly padded bottom press against her arm, the remainder of my punishment still lingering as she opened the car door and set me inside.

She sat me on the backless booster, but as Amanda pulled the seatbelt across me and clicked it into place, the distinction felt meaningless. I was strapped in, secured, my fate no longer in my hands.

She patted my head gently. "You’re lucky I still love you."

I turned my face toward the window, cheeks still hot, my body still tingling from the spanking. It wasn’t just the physical impact but the realization that I had been in this exact position before. And just like last time, the lesson had been crystal clear:

I wasn’t the one in charge anymore.

And every inch I lost, every rule I had to follow, would only make sure I never forgot it.

***

The ride home was heavy with silence. I sat in my booster seat, still feeling the warmth from my earlier punishment, the thick bulk of my diaper pressing against me with every slight movement. I didn’t dare speak.

Gripping the steering wheel tightly, Amanda sighed frustratedly before glancing at me through the rearview mirror. "Do you have any idea how much of an inconvenience this is?" she muttered, shaking her head. "I had to leave work in the middle of the day because of you. And now, I’ve got to figure out a Plan B for work."

I swallowed hard, shifting uncomfortably in my seat. "I—I can stay home alone. I can manage—"

Amanda scoffed, her eyes flashing in the mirror again. "Oh no, you don’t. That ship has sailed. You’ve proven you can’t be trusted, and you’re certainly not staying home alone anymore."

I clenched my fists, my breath catching. "But I’m twenty-nine, Amanda! I don’t need a—"

"A time at daycare?" she cut me off sharply. "Well, that’s exactly what you’re getting. I don’t care how old you are, Emily. What matters is your size, your actions, and the fact that I can’t be there to ensure you don’t get into trouble again."

I wanted to argue, to fight against it, but the truth was suffocating—I didn’t have a choice.

Amanda sighed again, but her voice softened slightly as she continued. "You’re already in diapers, so we’re just going to make things easier for you from now on."

I furrowed my brow. "W-what do you mean?"

She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she reached into the passenger seat, grabbing something from a small cooler she had brought. Then, with one hand still on the wheel, she lifted it into view—a baby bottle, already filled.

My stomach dropped.

"Starting today, you’ll be drinking milk from a bottle I filled."

I gawked at her. "You’re joking."

"I'm lactating, so I’m not," she said smoothly. "I’ve been ready for this, Emily. Started hormone therapy months ago, just for you. Knew you’d end up like this. My milk’s got what you need—plus, it’s easier. No mess, no fuss. Get used to it, sweetheart."

I stared at the bottle, my fingers twitching in my lap. "Amanda, please—"

"It’s Mommy now," she corrected, her voice firm. "Or have you forgotten already?"

I shrank back in my seat, my face burning as I clenched my jaw. My fate had been sealed.

And if that wasn’t enough, Amanda wasn’t done.

"Since you’re in diapers full-time, we’ll need to pick up some things," she continued, listing them casually as if planning a grocery trip. "More diapers—different sizes since you’re still shrinking, baby powder, wipes, new clothes, a crib…"

I barely heard the rest. My heart was pounding too hard, the weight of her words pressing down on me. "And of course," she added as if it were an afterthought, "once you’re small enough, I won’t bother with the bottle anymore. I’ll feed you from the source 24/7--my tits will be the ONLY thing you’ll be getting."

I turned to the window, gripping the seatbelt as my mind spun. A crib. Breastfeeding. I used to pay bills, drive myself—now this? I couldn’t breathe past the weight of it.

This wasn’t just punishment anymore.

This wasn’t just a transition.

This was a complete regression.

The car slowed to a stop, and I glanced up, blinking in confusion. We hadn’t talked about stopping—hadn’t said much at all since leaving school. Then I saw the bright yellow arches of McDonald’s. Amanda pulled into the drive-thru, her fingers tapping on the wheel as she scanned the menu.

"I’m starving," she muttered, then glanced back at me through the rearview mirror. "And you could use something in your tummy too, little one."

I didn’t argue. I was still reeling from everything that had happened that day, and honestly, the idea of food—even something as simple as a Happy Meal—was almost a relief.

Amanda placed her order—a Big Mac, medium fries, and a drink—before turning her attention to mine. "And a Happy Meal for my little girl," she said sweetly into the speaker, not even bothering to ask what I wanted. Four-piece nuggets, apple slices, and milk."

I swallowed hard, sinking deeper into my booster seat. The woman at the speaker didn’t react; it wasn’t unusual for someone to order for their child. But I knew. Amanda knew.

When we reached the pickup window, Amanda handed over her card and took the two bags and drinks before pulling into a parking spot. The smell of food filled the car, making my stomach grumble.

"Here you go, sweetheart," she said, passing my Happy Meal to me before opening her bag and pulling out her sandwich.

I dug into the food, eating as much as possible, grateful for something familiar. But as I reached for my drink, I froze.

Instead of the usual small carton of milk, Amanda held a plastic sippy cup, its pastel pink lid screwed on tight. It loomed in my shrinking hands, heavier than it should’ve been. My stomach twisted as I watched her reach into the cooler, pulling out a bottle of pre-pumped breast milk and pouring it inside.

"Drink up, baby girl," she cooed, shaking the cup slightly before handing it to me. "Might as well get used to it."

I hesitated, my fingers trembling as I took the cup from her.

"Amanda—"

"Mommy," she corrected, her voice sharper now. "And don’t even think. Drink it, or you’re getting another spanking right here."

The lingering sting from earlier was still fresh in my mind, and I knew better than to push my luck. Without another word, I raised the sippy cup to my lips–both hands, may I mind you–and took a sip.

The taste hit me immediately—sweet, but not like anything I recognized. It was too sweet, cloying and heavy, with a thickness that clung to my tongue like syrup. My usual 2% milk was light, thin, almost watery, with a clean, crisp taste I could chug without thinking. This… this was rich, almost greasy, and the chill made it worse—cold cream sliding down my throat, coating everything it touched. I gagged, my stomach lurching at the unfamiliar texture.

I couldn’t help it. My body reacted before my brain caught up, and I spat it out, the milk spraying across my lap and dripping onto the car seat. My hands flew to my mouth, but the damage was done—wet streaks stained my dress, and the sickly sweet smell filled the air.

Amanda’s smile vanished. Her eyes locked onto me through the rearview mirror, narrowing with disapproval. “Emily!” she snapped, her voice cutting through the hum of the car. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“It’s disgusting!” I blurted, wiping my mouth with my sleeve. My voice trembled, caught between defiance and shame. “It’s too thick, too sweet—it’s nothing like my milk!”

“You don’t get to decide that,” Amanda said, her tone icy. She slammed the car into park and twisted around in her seat, her movements sharp and deliberate. “This is your milk now, and you will drink it. Spitting it out like a brat isn’t an option.”

I shrank back into the booster seat, my heart pounding. “Mommy, please—I can’t—”

“You can, and you will,” she cut me off. Before I could protest again, she flung her door open and marched around to my side. The car door yanked open with a force that made me flinch, and her hands were on me in seconds—unbuckling my seatbelt, pulling me out onto the pavement.

“Mommy, no!” I whimpered, but she didn’t hesitate. She spun me around, bending me over the edge of the car seat, my padded bottom sticking out helplessly. Her hand came down fast and hard—SMACK!—the sound echoing in the quiet parking lot. The diaper softened the blow, but the sting of humiliation burned hotter than the impact.

“You do not spit out your milk,” she said, her voice stern and measured. SMACK! Another swat landed, jolting me forward. “This is what you get now, Emily. You’re going to learn to like it.” SMACK!

Tears welled up, blurring my vision. “I’m sorry!” I choked out, my hands gripping the seat.

SMACK! “Are you going to behave?” she asked, pausing with her hand raised.

“Yes, Mommy,” I whispered, my voice breaking.

She delivered one last SMACK! before stepping back, her breath steady despite the effort. “Good. Now sit.”

Shaking, I climbed back into the booster seat, my cheeks flushed with shame. Amanda picked up the sippy cup from where it had rolled onto the floor and thrust it into my hands. “Drink,” she ordered, her tone leaving no room for argument.

I stared at the cup, the memory of that awful taste still lingering. But the throbbing ache in my backside was a sharper warning. I lifted it to my lips and forced a sip, grimacing as the thick, sweet liquid hit my tongue again. My throat tightened, but I swallowed, fighting every instinct to spit it out.

Amanda watched, her expression softening just enough to show approval. “See? That wasn’t so hard.”

I didn’t answer. I just kept drinking, sip after grudging sip, the richness settling like a weight in my stomach. It was still disgusting—nothing like the 2% milk I used to pour over cereal or gulp after a long day. Back then, food was my choice: sandwiches, apples, whatever I wanted. Now, this was it—cold, syrupy breast milk, forced down my throat because Amanda said so.

It was revolting.

After the milk fiasco in the McDonald’s parking lot, Amanda didn’t waste time. She shoved the car into gear, her jaw tight, and peeled out onto the road like a woman on a mission. The sippy cup sat in my lap, half-empty, its pastel pink lid mocking me with every bump in the pavement. My backside still smarted from the spanking—six swats in one day, a new personal record—and the thick, sodden diaper pressed against me, a cold, clammy reminder of my latest failure. I didn’t dare speak. The taste of her breast milk lingered, heavy and sweet, coating my throat like regret.

“We’re going shopping,” Amanda announced, her voice clipped as she flicked on the turn signal. “You need supplies, and I’m not waiting another day to get this sorted.”

I stared out the window, the Chicago suburbs blurring past in streaks of gray and green. Shopping. A word that used to mean freedom—strolling through aisles, picking out jeans or a new phone case, swiping my card like it mattered. Now it meant something else entirely. I shifted in the booster seat, the bulk of the diaper forcing my legs apart, and felt the wet padding squish beneath me. My stomach twisted.

The engine hummed as Amanda pulled out of the McDonald’s lot, the taste of her breast milk still coating my tongue like a stubborn film I couldn’t scrape off. My padded backside throbbed faintly from the spanking, the thick diaper amplifying every shift against the booster seat. I stared out the window, the Chicago skyline blurring past, all steel and glass towering over me like a judgment I couldn’t escape. At 3’8”, the world wasn’t just big anymore—it was colossal, and I was shrinking into its shadow.

The store loomed ahead, a sprawling beast of concrete and neon signs: Target. Amanda parked close to the entrance, the handicapped spot a silent acknowledgment of my new reality. She unbuckled me from the booster seat, her hands swift and practiced, and before I could protest, she clipped a baby harness around my chest. The straps dug into my shoulders, the leash dangling from the back like a tether to my lost independence. I looked up at her and felt the gap between us widen—not just in height, but in power.

“Let’s go, sweetheart,” she said, tugging the leash gently.

I stumbled forward, my legs forced apart by the bulk of the MiniCare XS diaper, its plain white plastic crinkling with every step. The blue wetness indicator line ran down the center, a stark reminder of my vulnerability. Waddling wasn’t optional anymore—it was inevitable, each movement a swaying, infantile shuffle that drew eyes from every corner of the parking lot. My cheeks burned, the harness pulling me along like a reluctant puppy as we crossed the threshold into the store.

Inside, the air hit me first—cool, sterile, laced with the faint scent of popcorn from some distant concession stand. The ceiling soared above, dotted with fluorescent lights that cast everything in a harsh, unforgiving glow. Shelves stretched up like canyon walls, stocked with goods I used to browse without a second thought. Now, I had to crane my neck just to see the top rows, my world reduced to a toddler’s-eye view. Once, I’d pushed a cart through these aisles, my credit card in hand, my phone buzzing with texts. Now, my pockets were empty, my accounts frozen, my phone a memory confiscated by the Minim Virus Act. I couldn’t even check the internet—God, I missed Reddit, the mindless scroll, the illusion of connection. Amanda held the reins now, financial and otherwise, her cart rattling ahead as I waddled in her wake.

The store was a circus of sizes, a warped reflection of the virus’s reach. Shoppers of every height milled around—some normal-sized, others shrunken like me, their lives reshaped by the same invisible thief. A woman, maybe 4’5”, pushed a cart with a shrinkee toddler strapped into the seat, his tiny legs kicking in a diaper that matched mine. Nearby, a man no taller than 2’6” shuffled past, his jeans tailored to fit his diminished frame, a resigned slump in his shoulders. The employees were a mix too—some in children’s clothing, bright polos and khakis scaled down for bodies that couldn’t lift a box but could still ring up a sale. Others, smaller still, stood on counters as greeters, their voices high and chirpy, or sat perched like living props beside displays of baby gear. One, a girl barely a foot tall, waved mechanically from a shelf, her doll-sized uniform pristine, her eyes vacant. I wondered if she missed her old life as much as I did.

“Keep up, Emily,” Amanda called, her voice sharp as she turned down the baby aisle.

I hurried after her, the wet diaper chafing against my thighs. I hadn’t noticed it at first, too caught up in the store’s chaos, but now it was unmistakable—the warm, heavy sag between my legs, the Elmo design swollen with my latest accident. My breath hitched. When did it happen? In the car? Crossing the lot? I hadn’t felt a thing, just like this morning, just like yesterday.

“Mommy,” I whispered, tugging at the leash, my voice small and trembling, as Amanda picked up a couple packs of MiniCare XS diapers. “My diaper… it’s wet.”

Amanda didn’t stop. She grabbed a pack of Pampers Swaddlers, Size 6, and tossed it into the cart, her eyes scanning the shelf for more. “As soon as I get what you need.” She kept grabbing every size and brand like money’s no object.

“But it’s uncomfortable,” I pleaded, my hands fidgeting at my sides. The sogginess pressed against me, a clammy weight that made every waddle worse. I could feel it shifting, threatening to leak, the powder from the nurse’s change long since overwhelmed.

“You’ll be fine,” she said, her tone dismissive as she added a pack of Size 5s to the pile. “We’ve got a lot to get—diapers, wipes, powder, clothes, a crib, playpen, baby fence, bassinet just in case. No time for a change now.”

My stomach twisted, fear and shame coiling tight. Wait? In this? I looked down at myself, the dress barely hiding the bulge of the soaked diaper, and imagined the stares, the whispers, the inevitable moment someone noticed. The harness tugged again, pulling me forward as Amanda moved on, oblivious or uncaring—I couldn’t tell which.

The baby aisle was a nightmare of pastel colors and oversized packaging, each item a brick in the wall of my regression. Amanda piled the cart high—diapers in every size from 7 down to 1, anticipating my descent; stacks of onesies in 3T, 2T, 18 months, all soft and cartoon-covered; a crib with slats that would cage me in at night; a netted playpen for the living room, a baby fence to keep me contained. I watched her grab a bassinet, her fingers lingering on the soft lining, and my chest tightened. She was planning for my final height of two feet tall, for the day I’d be small enough to cradle like an infant. Twenty-two days left, and she was already building my nursery to replace the room I had.

I waddled beside her, the wet diaper growing colder, heavier, the chafing turning raw. Every step was a reminder of my dependence, the harness, a chain I couldn’t break. Shoppers passed us—some staring, some averting their eyes. A woman with a shrinkee in a stroller glanced at me, her expression unreadable, then whispered something to her companion. My ears burned. Did they see the sag? Smell it? I wanted to shrink faster, disappear into the floor, but the virus didn’t work that way. It took its time, peeling me apart one inch, one dignity, at a time.

“Mommy, please,” I tried again, my voice cracking as we reached the checkout.

Amanda sighed, finally looking down at me. She had 3 carts full of babyhood I couldn’t unsee, like she’s on a shopping spree, using what the government gave her. She crouched, her eyes level with mine, and for a moment, I thought she’d relent. But then she said, “Almost done, dear.”

My patience was thin. The cashier—a shrinkee herself, maybe 3’5”, in a red vest tailored to her size—scanned the items, her hands quick and mechanical. Our eyes met briefly, a flicker of understanding passing between us, but she said nothing. Just another day in this broken world.

The wet diaper clung to me as Amanda paid, her card swiping where mine used to. I stood there, harnessed, helpless, the leash taut in her grip. Fear gnawed at me—not just of the moment, but of what came next.

The carts rattled toward the exit, being assisted by fellow workers. Rolling monuments to my unraveling life, but Amanda veered suddenly, the leash tugging me sideways. “Restroom first,” she said, her voice clipped, as if the decision were an afterthought. My stomach lurched. The wet diaper sagged between my legs, cold and heavy. I’d been begging for a change, but now that it was happening, dread clawed at me—public, exposed, no escape.

The women’s restroom loomed ahead, its tiled entrance a maw swallowing us whole. The air shifted as we crossed the threshold—cooler, sharper, laced with the faint tang of bleach and damp porcelain. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting stark shadows across the white walls, the floor a checkerboard of gray and beige tiles slick with faint sheen. A row of sinks stretched to my left, their chrome faucets glinting like unblinking eyes, and to my right, a line of stalls stood like sentinels, their green metal doors chipped at the edges. The place hummed with quiet life—water dripping somewhere, a distant flush, the murmur of voices from the store beyond.

Amanda pulled me toward the farthest stall, the one with the universal access symbol and a horizontal wall-mounted baby changing station bolted inside. The leash tightened as I dragged my feet, my sneakers squeaking against the tile, the soaked diaper chafing with every waddling step. “Mommy, no,” I said, my voice a low, desperate rasp. “Not here. Please.”

She didn’t slow, her grip firm as she pushed the stall door open with her shoulder. “You’ve been whining about that diaper for a while, Emily. Now you’ve got it. Inside.”

The door clanged shut behind us, the lock sliding into place with a metallic click that echoed in the tight space. The stall was bigger than most, the walls a dull green, the air thick with the faint mustiness of too many bodies passing through. The changing station hung on the wall to my right—a beige plastic slab, its surface scratched and scuffed, a faded sticker of a smiling baby peeling at the edges.

I backed up, my spine hitting the cold metal partition, the harness straps digging into my chest. “I can wait,” I stammered, my hands balling into fists. “Till we’re home. I don’t need this now.”

Amanda set the shopping bag down—a pack of MiniCare XS diapers peeked out, their plain white packaging stark and unadorned, save for the clinical blue line illustrated down the center—and turned to face me. Her eyes, sharp and unyielding, pinned me in place. “Oh, you’re getting changed, little girl. Right here, right now. I’m not hauling you home in that mess, and I’m not letting you leak all over my car.” She reached for the harness clip, her fingers deft as she unhooked it, letting the leash dangle loose. “Up you go.”

“No!” I snapped, swatting her hands away, my voice rising despite the tremble in it. “I’m not some baby you can just—just strip down in a public bathroom! I’m twenty-nine, Amanda! I don’t want this!”

Her jaw tightened, and for a moment, the air between us crackled with something dangerous. She straightened to her full height, towering over me like a storm cloud, and when she spoke, her voice was low, deliberate, a blade wrapped in silk. “You listen to me, Emily Otha Johnson. You’re not in charge anymore. You lost that when you decided to act out at school, when you couldn’t keep your Pull-ups dry, when you spat my milk across my car. You’re 3’8” and shrinking, and that blurred blue line on your diaper shows you’ve soaked it through because you can’t control yourself. So here’s your choice: I change you now, or I take that diaper off and you go commando till we’re home—wet dress, wet legs, no protection. And trust me, you’ll be begging for a diaper before we hit the parking lot.”

The words hit me like a slap, stripping away the last threads of my defiance. Commando? In this dress, with my bladder betraying me every hour? I pictured the cold air against my skin, the inevitable dribble down my thighs, the stares of strangers as we waddled back to the car. My chest heaved, panic and shame warring inside me, but I knew she wasn’t bluffing. She’d do it—leave me bare and helpless, a lesson in obedience I wouldn’t forget.

I dropped my gaze, my fists unclenching, the fight draining out of me like water through a sieve. “Fine,” I muttered, barely audible. “Do it.”

“Good girl,” Amanda said, her tone softening just enough to sting.

She scooped me up under the arms, her strength effortless as she lifted me onto the changing station. The plastic was hard and cold against my back, the edge digging into my thighs as my legs dangled, too short to reach the floor. My dress bunched up around my waist, exposing the sodden MiniCare XS, the plain white surface darkened by wetness, the blue line now a deep, accusing shade. The smell hit me then—sharp, sour, a faint ammonia bite that made my nose wrinkle and my cheeks burn hotter.

Amanda worked fast, her hands steady as she peeled back the hem of my dress and tucked it under my chin. “Hold still,” she said, her voice all business now, like this was routine.

Her fingers found the two tapes on each side of the diaper—four in total, smaller but more numerous than I was used to. She ripped them open with four quick shrrrips, the sound echoing off the tiles, loud enough to make me flinch. The front flap fell forward, heavy and sagging, revealing the soaked padding beneath. Cool air rushed against my skin, prickling the dampness, and I squeezed my eyes shut, willing myself anywhere but here.

“First time for everything,” Amanda murmured, almost to herself, as she slid the wet diaper out from under me.

The rustle of plastic filled the stall, followed by the dull thump as she dropped it into the trash slot built into the wall. I peeked through my lashes—she was studying me, her brow furrowed slightly, like I was a puzzle she was solving on the fly. Her first time changing me, my first time being changed. A milestone neither of us had asked for.

She grabbed a wipe from the pack in the bag, the cold shock of it making me gasp as she swiped it across my skin—down my inner thighs, over the creases, a clinical efficiency that left no room for dignity. The baby powder came next, a soft puff as she twisted the cap and shook it out, the sweet, chalky scent filling my lungs. Her hand smoothed it in, cool and dry against the rawness, and I bit my lip, fighting the urge to squirm. The rustle of a fresh diaper followed—a MiniCare XS, its plain white surface unfolding with a crisp snap. The padding was thick, quilted, stark white with a thin blue line down the center, clinical and unyielding.

“Lift,” she said, tapping my hip.

I obeyed, my hips rising an inch off the table, and she slid the diaper beneath me, the softness brushing my skin like a promise I didn’t want. She pulled the front up between my legs, the bulk forcing them apart, the padding thick and unyielding, a weight that settled over me like a sentence. Her fingers pressed the two tapes on each side into place—four shrrrips in total—sealing me in with a snugness that felt final. The plastic crinkled as she adjusted it, her thumbs smoothing the waistband just below my belly button, the plain white surface stretching across my front, the blue line a silent sentinel.

“There we go,” she said, stepping back to admire her work. She pulled my dress down, the fabric catching slightly on the diaper’s bulk, and gave the front a gentle pat. “All clean and dry. Was that so bad?”

I didn’t answer.

I sat up slowly, the changing station creaking under me, and slid off the edge, my sneakers hitting the tile with a soft thud. The new diaper felt substantial—heavy, thick, the padding pressing against me with every shift. It crinkled with clinical efficiency, a constant reminder of my regression, the blue line a silent witness to my loss of control. My legs bowed slightly, the thickness forcing that waddling gait I couldn’t shake, and the harness snapped back into place as Amanda clipped it on, the leash taut in her hand once more.

She opened the stall door, the cart waiting outside. “Let’s go home, baby girl,” Amanda said, her voice soft but firm.

I followed, head low, the fresh diaper crinkling with every step. The doors whooshed open ahead, but I didn’t look at my reflection.

I knew what I was—a woman drowning in a shrinking body, taped into a fate I couldn’t outrun.
